BDINETNEWS STAFF CORRESPONDENT, CHITTAGONG
The rescue operation of businessman and BNP leader Alhaj Jamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury 26 has no result even after 26 days of kidnapped. Now it become a point of contention between the law-enforcing agencies and political party leaders of the port city.
The only tangible result so far seems to be the arrest of Sultan Ahmed, the bodyguard of UP chairman Kashem, and presenting him before the court for remand. The court granted seven days remand today.
The joint rescue operation by the police and the BDR is reported to be ?ontinuing?in the remote areas of Fatikchhari and adjoining areas, where Chowdhury is suspected to have been taken by his abductors. But it is alleged that several dishonest policemen had misguided the rescue operation, with the authorities ordering four police officers of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) ?tand released?and one sub-inspector of Kotowali thana ?losed?
The law-enforcing agencies, on their part, are unhappy that the political party leaders are not cooperating sincerely, it is alleged.
Even confusion arose regarding the whereabouts of the abducted businessman as the CMP claimed that the kidnappers were holding the victim inside Fatikchhari while the district police said that he was taken elsewhere.
Sources said that negotiations were held between the abductors and the family members of the victim. Other sources said the family members of the victim paid Taka 50 lakh as ransom according to the demand of the abductors. But the family members denied the payment of ransom to the abductors.
Mrs Happy Chowdhury, wife of Jamal Uddin Chowdhury, told, "The abductors have cancelled all contacts by telephone since July 28. I don? know whether my husband is alive or dead."
The abductors demanded Tk. 50 lakh for the release of the businessman over phone on the night of July 27, but they did not mention the place where the money had to be paid. After that they did not contact the family, she said.
She said everyday the police assure her of the rescue of her husband, but regretted that days are passing and Chowdhury? whereabouts or rescure remains uncertain.
Mrs Chowhdury was also sorry that "nobody came forward to help us", but made no allegations against anybody.
She, however, mentioned that the kidnappers had warned them not to disclose the incident of abduction and the demand for ransom. But the journalists and the police publicised the incident after which the abductors stopped all contacts by telephone, she added.
The members of Chowdhury? family are quite upset and the house has turned into a grief-stricken place. The family members are also passing their days in insecurity as they have received threats on their lives.
All the business enterprises of the victim? U A Chowdhury & Company at Bahaderhat, a hotel at Chawk Bazar, Happy Design Ltd. and F H Apparel Ltd.?ave remained closed since his abduction.
Jamal Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury was abducted while returning to his residence at Chandgaon Residential Area from his business firm at Chawk Bazar under Kotowali thana on the night of July 24. for more info
